The End Of Primogeniture

Did you hear this? The royal rules have been changed, (for the British branch) if Kate and William have a baby girl first she will be entitled to be the queen, no more waiting for a boy. This rule of primogeniture, is being over turned after 300 years of being enforced.

"In future, the order of succession should be determined simply by the order of birth," British Prime Minister David Cameron said in announcing the agreement at a Commonwealth leaders' summit. "And we've agreed to introduce this for all descendents from (Charles) the Prince of Wales."
"Put simply, if the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were to have a little girl, that girl would one day be our queen."

IBM Learning Chip

Are Days Of The Terminator Getting Closer?

IBM have developed a computer system, consisting of two chips, one has 262,144 programmable synapses, while the other contains 65,536 learning synapses, it works in a similar way to brain synapses. When new information is received into the learning chip this little beauty is capable of perceiving the more important information and deciding to use it, whilst applying to a lesser degree, the input that proving to be less helpful.

Some forward thinkers are predicting a future where this technology will reach a tipping point where machine consciousness is possible. However there are those that are more conservative, like Dr Mark Bishop, professor of cognitive computing at Goldsmiths, he says " I understand cognition to be something over and above a process simulated by the execution of mere computations, see such claims as verging on the magical."

IBM has been awarded grant money from US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), $21m USD, for it's work on the synapses project, that make a person wonder.

Google Takes Over More

Google are now owners of Motorola Mobility giving giving them patents to around 17,000 mobiles and thousands more pending.

Its purchase of Motorola Mobility (for $12.5 billion) gives Google ownership of 17,000 mobile patents, with thousands more pending. Because of this shares have risen in Samsung and HTC by 4% and 2% respectively.

There are those that are not fans of Google, I can see their point, Google are posed to take over the cyber world, is this a bad thing? When Google have taken over every thing except perhaps Apple, what will the world be in for then?

Of course it all depends on how you look at things, the latest acquisition means Android software licensed phones, could now and in the future, receive patent lawsuit protection.

"Google is a massive global software company with huge profit margins, genius engineers, extraordinarily high pay scales and a near-monopoly on the most amazing advertising business the world has ever seen," Blodget wrote. "Motorola is a has-been, low-margin, global hardware-manufacturing business that operates at break-even."

Why Is BP Oil Having Trouble Expanding?

Is it that people do not want to be associated with BP oil, (who can forget the catastrophic mistakes of late) or is there a huge shortage of skilled engineers?

According the the latest research from industry body Opito, the Oil and gas industry is expected to create over 15000 new jobs in the UK alone, over the next five years.

BP's head of North Sea operations Trevor Garlick, says the company could struggle to fill roles, as getting hold of the right people is an issue for BP. In July they announced three billion pounds will be invested in redeveloping two oil fields, in the North Sea.

Any British engineers what to work for BP on the Job training supplied?

What Was The Meteorogical Event Of 13Aug

Shooting stars, a reliable event every year, as the earth passes through the debris from the Swift-tuttle comet. However because it appears that the meteor shower hails from Perseid constellation it is called the Perseids.

The most spectacular view was last night, with an intense show of one per minute, this was best seen in the northern hemisphere around 11pm. If you missed it, don't despair there is still plenty of time to make several wishes, as the display does not cease until 22nd August.

Just look to the North Eastern sky, there is a full moon so the edge is taken of the brightness of the stars, best that can be hoped for is cloud over the moon with clear sky's towards Perseid.

Happy star gazing.

How Smokers Can Lower Cancer Risk

New study, reveled that those who smoke 30 minutes after waking up increase their chances of getting cancer by almost 80%, over those that wait at least an hour. In another related study, the calculated risk factor was 58%.
It is uncertain why this is, Dr Joshua Muscar, lead researcher, sermonizes that perhaps, "These smokers have higher levels of nicotine and possibly other tobacco toxins in their body, and they may be more addicted than smokers who refrain from smoking for a half hour or more."

Then Cancer Research UK's Professor Robert West added saying: "Smokers who light up soon after waking tend to smoke each cigarette more intensively. So the most likely explanation of this finding is that the sooner a smoker lights up, the more smoke is taken into the lungs, and the higher the level of exposure to cancer causing chemicals."

"This may help estimating levels of tobacco exposure more than just looking at the usual daily cigarette consumption."

Not that it is an excuse to smoke, but for the smokers out there this is useful information.

Cities In Britain Suffer Violance

Social Media has been named, by the police chief in London UK, as being the cause of flash riots though London and other major cities, it is unclear as the the reason for these acts. He also said that the police, no matter how much training they have had, will not be able to deal with the crisis at hand. (Here's hoping that's a double bluff.) In North America social media has been responsible for flash mobs but it is for fun, not violence and looting.

Many businesses have been looted and set on fire, some of which have residences above them. The riotous mobs are popping up recklessly in Manchester, Bristol and Birmingham also. Seemingly senseless violence, spectators filming, gratuitous sealing going on and sometimes the police taking 2hrs to reach the trouble.

Perhaps the police could use the social media to their advantage, instead of moaning about it.

Mars Shows Signs Of Water

Nasa pictures have reviled signs of flowing water on Mars, a sequence of images show tendrils (the kind made by water) several meters wide, these emerge from rocky outcrops and look to be made of thawing mud, say researchers.

"It's hard to imagine they are formed by anything other than fluid seeping down slopes," said Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Project Scientist Richard Zurek of Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, but they appear when it's still too cold for fresh water.
"Their results are consistent with the presence of large and extensive underground salty lakes on Mars." says Professor Shiladitya DasSara. Could halophilic microbes survive on Mars? The professor is excited at eh possibility.

Pirate Movie Sites

Is this the beginning of the end?
UK court judge has ruled, British Telecom block pirate Newzbin2 from broadcasting through there internet connection.
Seems this site that streams movies and the like, is doing so illegally and Hollywood companies feel violated by such sites, even though the average takings for movies in in the thousands, it is the legal principal that counts.

Captain America: The First Avenger Paramount Pictures $65,058,524 $65,058,524

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 Warner Bros. Pictures Distribution $47,422,212 $273,539,281

Friends With Benefits Screen Gems $18,622,150 $18,622,150

Transformers: Dark of the Moon Paramount Pictures $12,051,735 $325,841,185

Horrible Bosses New Line Cinema $11,884,319 $82,566,703

Zookeeper Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group $8,702,055 $59,206,255

Cars 2 Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures $5,655,857 $176,375,295

Winnie the Pooh Walt Disney Studios Distribution $5,162,046 $17,594,297

Bad Teacher N/A $2,610,925 $94,365,688

At the end of the summer the whys and wherefores of how this will happen,be will put in detail. In his ruling, Mr Justice Arnold stated: "In my judgment it follows that BT has actual knowledge of other persons using its service to infringe copyright: it knows that the users and operators of Newzbin 2 infringe copyright on a large scale, and in particular infringe the copyrights of the studios in large numbers of their films and television programs."

Chris Marcich, president and managing director of MPA Europe said: "This ruling from Justice Arnold is a victory for millions of people working in the UK creative industries and demonstrates that the law of the land must apply online.

"This court action was never an attack on ISPs but we do need their co-operation to deal with the Newzbin site which continually tries to evade the law and judicial sanction. Newzbin is a notorious pirate website which makes hundreds of thousands of copyrighted products available without permission and with no regard for the law."
The MPA says they will go after more ISPs.

Virologists Working On Super Antibody

There are so many viruses out there to catch, virologist are constantly researching and studying (cause it's their job) ways to defeat the nasty ones. They are looking at a super antibody that could possibly lead to a universal vaccine.

Virologists and researchers around the world have been on a quest to develop a universal vaccine, that will attack a common denominator of all influenza that does not mutate in anyway.

Scientists isolated an antibody called F16 this targets a protein found on the surface of all influenza A viruses. After taking samples of immune cells from 100,000 patients, who had a flu vaccine or the flu.

"We've tried every subtype of influenza A and it interacts with them all, We eventually hope it can be used as a therapy by injecting the antibody to stop the infection." says Sir John Skehel MRC scientist at Mill Hill. "We eventually hope it can be used as a therapy by injecting the antibody to stop the infection."

It is a well known fact that those people who have suffered viruses develop an immunity to them, well it has also been suggested that those who have had swine flu could have developed a super immunity to other infections.

Mice that had lethal doses of the H1N1 virus, were then given the antibody two days later and survived. Professor John Oxford, a virologist at Queen Mary, University of London, said: "It's pretty good if you've got one against the whole shebang, that's a good step forward."

However it will be a few more years before the structure of the antibody can be used to make a vaccine.

UK Getting Closer To Full Electric Car System

Electric Cars

More British citizens may consider buying an electric car, as Welcome Break service stations, on the motorways, are planning to put many recharging points in, along with the regular gas and diesel options. Power stations with solar give the best environmental option.

There are several stylish electric for sale in Brittan, now with more service stations having the battery charging available, on the motorways it is likely British folks will be purchasing them. The common complaint about electric cars is the charge time, granted most of the cars are fitted for the 13A system, (12 hours to top up the battery) but more and more have the 7 point 32A charging system which will get you going with a full charge in an hour, of course this speed comes with a higher price, the choice is paying for hotel room or faster charging.

Here is a selection of some kinds of electric vehicles available on the UK market.

Stevens is a new father and son British company, they have a ZeCar and a ZeVan.

Tazzari started in Italy in 1963, after 45 years of car building and design, have now branched out into the electric vehicle.
Tesla eclectic is attracting much attention as the Tesla Roadster is the first production electric sports car, it stops all the astigmatism of electric cars being boxy and slow, this amps up the speed to 125mph and has very good acceleration.

Is Change Coming To Cuba?

Because Cuba is a communist country, since 1959 people have not had private property, well they may have the title to their home but where not allowed to sell it for monetary gain, they are at present only allowed to pass on the homes to family members.

Now however the latest proposal at the national assembly, to up date Cuba's economic model, is to allow Cubans to sell their homes for money or to buy another house. Also big news citizens will be able to buy any car they want and sell their old car, good news for some.

Will this result in the sprouting up of car dealerships all over Cuba? Or will measures be put in place to prevent that? Could a career in real estate be the new 'it' job in country, what does this mean to the average citizen, well Cubans have been looking forward to this change for a while, even though the political party whilst recognizing the right to private property, will still control prices and tax.

Largest Crop Of Marijuana Burns In Mexico

Mexican soldiers found an enormous grow-op on the Baja peninsula, the area which is commonly has cacti and scrub bushes growing on it. In an attempt to hide the plants the growers had used chilli and tomato plants, also carefully covering them with protected mesh to shield the massive expanse of marijuana from air patrols, did not work, as the land was found to be supporting a huge 120 tones of marijuana growing with sophisticated irrigation system.

This is the largest ever found in Mexico, soldiers who where patrolling the area came across it. Two workers thought to be working for the Sinaloa state, headquarters of the Sinaloa cartel led by Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, Mexico's most-wanted fugitive, where found at the 2.5km grow-op, are being questioned.

The powers that be, believe 120 men could have worked the farm, living in four make shift, plywood buildings, with a large bunkhouse having long sleeping platforms for around 60 people, a sitting room and a kitchen. Beans, cheese and salsa where still on the dinner table nearly three days after the raid, along with CDs of Norteno music. Women's undies and high heels were found in one of the smaller bedrooms. Army officials said women did not appear to have worked there, maybe just entertainment.

The current president Felipe Calderon declared war on drugs in 2006,shortly after coming into office, the president is the chief of the governing body of the Mexican Republic. He also serves as the head of the military forces of the United Mexican States. The tenure of the Mexican President continues for six years. Felipe Calderon, the present Mexican president came to the throne on 1st December 2006.

It is believed, drugs are responsible for forty thousand people being killed. The large field that sprang up in less than four months with fast growing plants some towering up to 6 feet and others just planted, is being ripped up by the root and burned. Stand back soldiers, as pot fumes are sent sky high, killing off the grows hopes of making the estimated 160 million dollars from the fields of plants.

Social Network Saves Life.

Kawasaki Disease

Postings by Deborah Copaken Kogan of her 4 year old son, while being checked for strep throat, caused a flurry of concerned comments, then as his condition got worse the author posted more pictures, any help would be good, as the still mystery illness gripped her son threateningly.

Luckily her postings on Facebook brought help, as a friend called saying "I hope you'll excuse me for butting in, but you have to get to the hospital. Now! My son Max had had the exact same symptoms, and was hospitalized for Kawasaki disease, a rare and sometimes fatal auto-immune disorder that attacks the coronary arteries surrounding the heart, the longer you wait, the worse the damage."

Another auto immune disease where the body perceives an attack and inevitably damages it's self.
Kawasaki disease can be fatal, if unchecked it causes inflammation in the arteries though out the body, in particularly the danger lies in the effect it has the arteries around the heart. It starts with a high fever, then continues into several other stages that can include large pealing chunks of skin, joint pain, diarrhea, bloodshot eyes, the list goes on.

The moral of the story being, if you or your loved ones, have strange symptoms that mystify doctors, post it on your social network. May be your friends have seen it before and they can save you a lot of time and heartache, with suggestions as to what it could be. Then you can take that information to the doctors.

Last year, the American Medical Association adopted social media policy guidelines, which encourage doctors to do things like take advantage of privacy settings and maintain the "appropriate" boundaries of the patient-physician relationship on the web.

Rare Spoon-Billed Birds

Really Rare Spoon-Billed Sandpiper

There are thought to be less than 120 breeding pairs of the Spoon-Billed Sandpiper left in existence, this cute little sandpiper is unique with it's spoon shaped bill, these birds nest in Russia, some of the eggs have been rescued they where placed in the Moscow zoo to be quarantined, in an effort to increase the population.

After quarantine the tiny eggs are shipped to a specially built unit at the headquarters of the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) in Slimbridge, Gloucestershire, UK. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), BirdLife International, is working closely with WWT and Birds Russia, to save a bird that would surly become extinct without intervention.

The Spoon-Billed Sandpiper migrates every year from Russia's Bay of Bay to Bengal in Bangladesh every year, preferring shore lines as their habitat. On the journey to Bangladesh the birds pass though various places including Japan, North Korea, the Republic of Korea, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh and India.

Hunting in their wintering habitat in Myanmar and Bangladesh, together with the degradation and reclaiming of inter-tidal mudflats, in many countries in Asia are thought to be the cause of the populations decline.

Happily the mission is a success so far, as the birds hatched on the way to their new home in Gloucestershire.

Rare Spoon-Bills Spotted In Scotland

The Scottish Wildlife Trust's Montrose basin reserve is where rare spoonbills have been spotted, this is cause for some excitement as these birds have not been seen in a group at the reserve before. Ranger Anna Cheshier for the reserve, is glad bird watchers in the area are able to see the unusual visitor.

"The spoonbill is unmistakable. It really stands out at Montrose Basin and we have been watching them carefully since the first sighting on the 28 June," she said.

"I have never seen more than one spoonbill at Montrose Basin so it is great news to see a group."

Royal Tour In Canada Over

Royals have a last Ye-ha in Canada whilst visiting Calgary, they kicked things off at the Calgary stampede, set off the fire works for the parade on Friday. Wearing nothing but the best cowboy gear plus the hats presented to them by the Mayor of Calgary, with their custom made cowboy boots.

Then it was off to CARPINTERIA, Calif. - Catherine watched her Prince William, take to the field for a polo match Saturday this was a recreational diversion during their visit to Southern California.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge drew a crowd to the sun-splashed Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club on the coast northwest of Los Angeles, the club charged about $400 a ticket to raise millions of dollars for charity and to celebrate the club's centenary.

The Prince was heard saying "My father, the Prince of Wales, and my brother, Harry, were as green as that grass outside when I told them I'd be here today," as he talked with guests at the reception, "Catherine and I have had a busy few days - so the prospect of being able to let loose this afternoon is wonderful for me."
Sounds like they enjoyed Saturday afternoon

Saturday night they get to dress up attend a British Academy of Film and Television Arts dinner honouring 42 young British actors and filmmakers, where they will be guests of honor, where there will be reportedly a huge amount of Hollywood celebrities attending, allegedly including, Tom Hanks, Nicole Kidman and Judd Apatow.
The question on my mind is, will the Duchess wear some of the Queens jewelry, a nice tiara or necklace perhaps.

Billions In Gold Found

Have you heard about the treasure found in India? It's the stuff of legends, estimated in the billions of dollars, reportedly staggering amounts in diamonds, pearls, rubies and all the rainbow in precious and semi-precious gem stones. Gold lots of gold, imagine it is being weighted in kilos! statues, coins, crowns, tiaras, a veil made of gold weighing in at a colossal 36 kilos, rings even a 6 meter long gold chain, a treasure that is the stuff dreams are made of.

In fact this could be the largest treasure ever found, far greater than that of King Tut

The valuables have been donated to the temple for at least 100 years, the 16th century temple in southern India, was built by the kings of Travancore, their decedents have looked after it until recently when it was taken over by the government who as a matter of procedure count all the contents. The Temple has hidden vaults and cellars containing treasure, the last time two of the vaults where opened was around 130 years ago.

The royal family, has been the custodians of the temple until recently.
The Supreme Court had received partitions from the royal family, appealing the Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple, not be taken over.

So what happens to all the treasure? There is much discussion about it, will it bring the price of gold down, if access amount are released on to the market at once? How does it get spent? Will the poor country spend it on the poor? Pay off dept? Or perhaps it will end up in a museum.

Day 4 Of Royal Tour

picture from hollywoodlife.com

Another day in the royal tour, this Sunday in Quebec and Montreal, much centering around the military today, including mass held on a navy ship, a ceremony to inspect the guard. William engages in small talk with some of the troupes in the 22nd regiment standing in their finery and large beefeater hats, as he inspects them.

Their highnesses will also attend the community Levis celebration in celebrating 375th anniversary, of the french troupes being defeated, this is causing a little controversy with the Quebec residents. before traveling to PEI in the evening, where rain is expected.

Kate and William also participated in a cooking class, on July 2nd at the Quebec Tourism and Hotel Institute, one of the things they wanted to do was learn how to make a souffle.

Kate was regally dressed with a fitted royal blue dress, that has a lace detailing across the shoulders. The Queen gave Kate the option of using any of her royal jewelry, so far I have seen the Maple leave broach, worn by Queen on her visits here.
Now it seems Canadians have become smitten with the new royal duchess, as the dresses she has been waring are selling out in minutes of being see, at online stores. My guess there is a wholesaler hoping to cash in, using law of supply and demand.
